Dvd2Xvid is free opensource simple easy to use utility to convert DVDs into Xvid video formats. dvd2xvid is a simple GUI for MEncoder aimed at converting DVDs to xvid formats.

Install Dvd2xvid
To install dvd2xvid, click thisĀ supported on openSUSE 11.1/11.0/10.3/10.2 from packman. This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories and download and install dvd2xvid and the required dependencies. Click next on the dvd2xvid installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install dvd2xvid and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

This should install dvd2xvid under “Applications – Multimedia – Media Editing”. Click dvd2xvid to launch it for the first time.
From the File menu, set the DVD mount path and if you have multiple DVD drives, choose the mount path for both the drives. Insert your DVD and click Mount DVD. Alterntaively, click File to choose the path if the DVD is already mounted. Click the button for select output file and browse to the location where your converted file will be saved and enter the name for it (say movie.avi)
You can edit the picture quality settings like Bitrate options and 2-pass encoding and Audio Encoding settings. The higher the bitrate, the bigger will the output file and the better the quality would be.
If you choose to set to convert only a select part of the DVD video, enter the start/stop time. Now all set, click Start writing to a new AVI file or append to combine the new video with an already existing AVI file.

This is exactly what I was searching for – I ‘ve installed several free progs in Windows and I had troubles with all of them. dvd2xvid works perfectly – and I can use it in Linux (where I spend 99,9% of my time in)
Here’s a front-end script to Mencoder which allows you to tweak all sorts of settings for the AVI (aspect ratio, size, cropping, etc.). Very simple to run from the shell.
