Google Gadgets for Linux is a free opensource (licensed under Apache License) platform for running desktop gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. The Google Desktop Gadgets for Linux are compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle.
There’s two main components to the application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently we have hosts written for GTK+ and QT, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similar to that of Google Desktop for Windows.
To install Google-Gadgets for Linux in openSUSE, we can simply use the 1-click install (supported on openSUSE11.0 & openSUSE 10.3) from the openSUSE Package repository or can add the repository to YaST package manager and install from there on. Let’s take the easy option of installing from the 1-click install.
From the following locations click to download the 1-click install file for your either GTK or QT as per your GNOME/KDE installation. This will download the .ymp file and open with YaST installer and complete the installation for you.
NOTE: Recommend GTK version of it as development on it seems more mature
openSUSE 11.0
Google-Gadgets-gtk
Google-Gadgets-Qt
openSUSE 10.3
Installing any of the above, will also download and install the base Google Gadget library for you.
Once installed, Google-Gadgets can be started as follows
From Terminal
opensuse11:~ # ggl-gtk
or alternatively press <ALT>+F2 and enter ggl-gtk (ggl-qt for KDE/QT).
This will launch Google Gadgets with default News feed and a clock. More can be added from the taskbar icon for Google-Gadgets.
To add a new gadget, right-click the icon and select “Add gadgets”. Select the gadget from your preferred category and click Click Add. That should do. You can also, provide a RSS URL to add the gadget.
I’ve heard that the Plasma devs are actually working on getting Google Gadgets integrated into Plasma. That would make it even more awesome!
